It’s been something like three quarters of a year since I last worked on some comics binding projects. I have suddenly realized I have enough time this summer to really crank out a bunch of projects. One of the big problems that I’ve been having lately is trying to figure out a new bindery ever since my previous one stopped doing covers. I’ve found one, but I need to see how the process works with them. Here’s the breakdown of what I plan to be doing in the next few weeks:
And when Flashpoint finishes up, I’ll be binding that too of course. Brightest Day is going to take forever, by the way, because I’m trying to figure out if or where I’m missing issues. I have a feeling there’s a couple of Titans issues that needs to get tracked down. Also, because the new bindery can put more issues in a single volume, my terrible idea — though amazing in its own strange, expensive way — will probably not happen. It looks like it’ll end up being a four-volume set.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Look at how pretty! VERY PRETTY!
All five of my books. How awesome are these?
All five of my blackest night hardcovers.
Blackest Night v. 4 & 5. Jeez these iphone pics are blurry as shit. Can’t wait until I get a new iPhone 4. Then it’ll be better.
Sooooooooo pretty.
Back covers. I really like these back covers.
Mind the blurry. First two projects:
Superboy Rebirth
The Flash Rebirth
So that’s Blackest Night v. 4 & 5 at the bindery and Superboy Rebirth and Flash Rebirth. This should be a hell of a lot quicker getting them back than the last batch of books.
I really need to stop working on this logo…
I’ve spent like five hours working and reworking the Brightest Day logo. Why? Because if I want to get my Brightest Day books bound I need a logo that doesn’t have any artifacts in it at 300 dpi. I also need it to be like 4000px wide…
I’ve had a terrible idea.
This is a quick mock up idea for a 9-volume “Complete Brightest Day” binding set. All the spines would add up to that awesome four-page gatefold spread from Blackest Night #8. Each volume is a specific color, likely corresponding to either a lantern ring, an entity, or a specific ringbearer from that specific part of the spectrum — so if it was the entities it’d be Black Hand, Butcher, Ophidian, Parallax, Ion, Adara, Proselyte, Predator, and the Entity.
How many issues would this require? Between 108-162. How much would this cost? A lot. The binding costs alone would reach about $375. Add in the issues, which will soon all be $3.99, you’re talking about a book set that could cost $800 easily. If I was smart I’d double the cost but try to sell the set. I doubt anyone would buy it for a grand though, and that’s what it’d cost for me to decrease costs to the point where I’d actually feel “okay” about it. If there are that many Brightest Day issues I’ll still probably do it though.
Here are my cost breakdowns for the first three Blackest Night binding projects. It is very, very expensive, obviously. Based on my current projections it should cost me around $488. It should be remembered that the cost of buying the six hardcovers to get the only “equivalent” that DC will be selling is $155. And that is still missing a number of issues and would be an arduous task to read.*
So is it worth that extra 200% markup? I think so. For one, this is a completely unique collection of Blackest Night that no one BUT me will ever have. It was also an incredible experience. Now would I go out and bind everything I see in sight? No. However, for crossovers like Blackest Night or Brightest Day that will never be collected correctly? Certainly..
*each individual hardcover only collects certain titles; so there’s a book of Green Lantern Corps, a book of Green Lantern, etc. This means that to properly read the story you have to read at least three of the hardcovers at a time. Especially toward the end of the series when Green Lantern and Blackest Night really start crossing over.
And here they are in their proper place on my bookshelf.
